The ‘Golden Whale’ Found After a Decade-Long Hunt

After chasing this card for over 10 years, the chase finally comes to an end…

The 2014-15 Upper Deck MVP Gold Script /100 is now in my collection! To call this card one of my white whales is an understatement, so I have cleverly dubbed it the ‘golden whale’.

I first heard of this card come up for sale once shortly after the release, but I wasn’t able to locate it. I found another through a card site in the Czech Republic, but it was already sold out. For a card serial numbered /100, you’d think I would have found a few more cards for sale over the years, but the Gold Scripts that year were fairly tough to find, especially if the player was not a household name in the league.

Similar to other years with the MVP product, the 2014-15 MVP Gold Scripts were retail exclusives that year, as they were located in Blaster packs sold in various retail outlets like Wal-Mart, etc. This meant that they were opened up by a large range of collectors from the experienced hobbyist to a younger child looking for a few loose packs to open for fun. This product originally released on August 6th, 2014.

These Gold Script parallels /100 were only found in retail blaster boxes.

This type of product can sometimes lead to some of these cards being owned by collectors who have no intention of selling them, and may rather trade them locally with friends, or just never offer them up at all and have them in their childhood collections forever.

There is nothing wrong with this, as we all have those childhood collections that mean a lot to us, but this shows how some retail exclusive parallels like these may take a longer to track down. While it may create some form of frustration, retail products and parallels like these are very good and healthy for the hobby, which is of course a very good thing in the long run.

I acquired this card from eBay in late April, as a collector was liquidating portions of his 14-15 MVP set, and I was lucky enough to snag this card as a part of a 11-card Gold Script lot he was selling. Thank goodness I happened to check eBay saved search notifications while out for an oil change at the mechanic, or I might have missed out on this card once again! Funny how pure luck and good timing works out in this hobby sometimes. The card arrived in-hand recently and it is fantastic. So glad to have finally crossed this one off the list!

Another reason why I have wanted to track down this card for my collection is that I’ve been a fan of the MVP Script parallels ever since I first saw them burst onto the hobby scene in the late 90’s when I was a kid. Ever since that time I’ve always had an affinity for these MVP parallel cards. Fitting that it would take over 10 years to track down the final one I needed in this collection. Do you have a card on your want list that’s been on there for many years?

If so, let me know. Maybe I can help. I hope you can locate your ‘White Whale’ one of these years.

Happy Collecting,

– Aaron
