Hey there everyone! Thought I would keep it rolling here with another blog post, just in time for Canada Day! Seeing how it’s July 1st, I figured I would shed some light on my Enroth collections short Canadian stint – when he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the few hockey cards that came with it, of course.
Though Enroth only started a few games for the Toronto Maple Leafs before being traded to Anaheim (and potentially his last stint in the NHL as of now), it was just enough time for him to be included in 16-17 Upper Deck Series 2, which was awesome at the time. You see, I’ve been a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs my entire life, so for Enroth to get some new cards (7 non-1/1 cards, to be exact) pictured in a Toronto uniform was really cool to me.
At the time, it also was a new opportunity to get involved with Upper Deck ePack site that is still really popular. I had a blast opening those packs and trading and combining those 10 Base cards to reach the Silver Foil parallel, then one-upping that feat by combining 10 Silver Foils to earn the Gold Rainbow Foil.
They are really beautiful cards in person, and these scans definitely do not do these cards justice.
Aside from the Upper Deck ePack craze, it was also another unique opportunity to grab one of those Toronto Expo Exclusive UD Midnight parallels. I was able to attend the Expo last year, so along with trying to fill holes in my other PC’s, I had to lookout for a Enroth UD Midnight card /25. Even though I had no luck picking one up at first, I eventually found a copy on eBay shortly after the Expo had concluded.
Love em’ or hate em’, printing plates are a staple in Upper Deck products, and 16-17 Series 2 was no different. The first printing plate that surfaced was the Black 1/1, which popped up in Germany of all places. Now, I’m not sure who else wanted this card, but the bidding war for that card was insane. I’ve had my fair share of bidding wars for Enroth’s cards over the years, but it really surprised me he would have that level of collectibility for a Leafs printing plate in 2016-17. Still, after coming out victorious, the printing plate was home.
After winning the Magenta on eBay as well with little to no competition shortly after, I thought I would have the rainbow in no time. But not so fast.. The Yellow plate took a while, but I always had eyes on it. It was ‘stuck’ on a user’s ePack account, just sitting there, waiting. I contacted the user many times but they had no intentions of moving it. They didn’t collect Enroth, Goalies, the Leafs, or nothing too specific from what I could tell, they just ripped a bunch of ePack products and had a massive inventory on there for collectors to look at. I was finally able to make a deal with another collector very quickly after the original user traded away a huge chunk of his cards away. I was super happy to land it.
Now…. for the missing link to this 4-card printing plate rainbow… 16-17 Upper Deck Series 2 Jhonas Enroth Printing Plate – Cyan 1/1. I have not seen a copy of this plate (I just filtered my own scan for it to look Cyan for blog purposes) … So if you happen to come across this plate in your hockey card travels, please let me know. It would finally put a “Double Rainbow” to bed and complete 16-17 Upper Deck Series 2 for my Jhonas Enroth PC.
