More Peerless Patches!

There are patch cards, and then there are patchcards.

I recently picked up this sweet 2012-13 Dominion Peerless Patches # 18/40 and I wanted to share a little bit about it.

Panini’s time in the hobby as a licensed NHL card manufacturer (2010-2014) was a notable era for a variety of reasons. In my opinion, they made great strides and pushed the envelope on what hockey cards can become, whether it be the characteristics of the product mix, the memorabilia used, the designs, or a mix of all of those things, I was very fond of Panini’s licensed era in the hobby.

One of the best things to come from the Panini NHL era was Dominion. I loved the designs and concept they explored with this brand of cards, and I especially loved their Peerless Patches sets.

The Peerless Patches cards were meant to rival Upper Deck’s The Cup Limited logos cards. These cards featured a large patch alongside a picture of the player, in addition to their autograph – all laid out nicely in a horizontal card design. I think the Peerless Patches sets really took a look the Limited Logos sets and decided to class it up a bit with there own style, and these cards were a hit with collectors.

Here’s a look at where this patch is from on the Buffalo Sabres front emblemAs you can see above, I was able to patch this patch to the front of the Sabres’ jersey emblem on the front of the jersey. This patch comes from one of the two sabre sword handles, and is arguably one of the best patches you could receive off of a Buffalo Sabres jersey.

I’ve seen the other sabre handle patch floating around over the years, but was never able to land it. Maybe one of these years!

Above are both of the Sabres sword handle patches from this set. The scan on the left was an older image of my most recent pickup, and the scan on the right is a card that I would like to acquire one day.Quick update: Incoming! As luck would have it, shortly after landing that card, I was able to find yet another Peerless Patches for the collection. Not too shabby! This card is numbered 3 of 40.
